Disc Bulge Treatment in Dublin
A disc bulge is when the soft disc between two vertebrae spreads beyond its normal border. It is one of the most common findings on a lower back MRI, often at L4-L5 or L5-S1, and it can cause back pain, stiffness and sometimes sciatica down the leg.
A bulge on a scan does not mean you need surgery. With the right rehab, most people get back to work, training and sport pain-free. We see disc patients every day at our Dublin 2 clinic and online.
Symptoms of a disc bulge
- Low back pain, often worse with sitting or bending
- Stiffness first thing in the morning
- Pain, tingling or numbness into the buttock or leg
- Pain with coughing, sneezing or lifting
Our approach to disc bulges
We start by reviewing your symptoms and any MRI, then test how your back and nerves respond to movement. Your plan then includes:
- Pain relief: hands-on treatment, positions and simple daily changes
- Progressive exercise: the core, glute and leg strength your spine needs
- Back to the gym: coached lifting so you can train with confidence again
- Prevention: desk setup, sleep and activity habits to stop it coming back

Frequently asked questions
Can a disc bulge heal on its own?
Yes. Many bulges and herniations shrink or stop causing pain over time, especially when you stay active and follow a progressive exercise plan.
Do I need an MRI?
Not always. We can diagnose most disc problems with a clinical assessment and refer for imaging only if it will change your treatment.
Is the gym safe with a disc bulge?
Usually yes, with the right exercises and loading. We coach you back into training in our rehab gym.
Do you offer online appointments?
Yes. We work with disc patients around the world through online consultations and rehab programmes.

I met Bob through his wife. He kindly agreed to help with a small dorsal avulsion after missing a step on the stairs. From the very beginning, Bob has been a fantastic listener and has been professional, friendly and incredibly helpful. He took the time to explain my injury clearly, answer all my questions and reassure me throughout my recovery. I always felt that I was in very good hands, and his knowledge and approach made the whole process much less stressful. I would highly recommend Bob to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional and caring physiotherapist.Posted on Google![]()

I came to Bob after struggling with a problem in my arm for almost a year. During that time, I had seen different specialists, had several tests done, tried different treatments and spent a lot of money, but I still wasn’t really getting better and didn’t fully understand what was causing the problem. When I first came to Bob, the pain and discomfort were affecting both my work and everyday life. I also had tingling and other unpleasant sensations in my hand and forearm, and after such a long time with the problem I was starting to wonder if I would ever get back to normal. From the first appointment, Bob took my situation seriously. He did a proper assessment, explained everything clearly and created a treatment and rehabilitation plan specifically for me. During the treatment we used modern equipment including the Globus DiaCaRe 7000 TECAR Therapy system and STORZ Medical radial shockwave therapy, together with hands-on treatment, exercises and gradual strengthening. What I really appreciated was that Bob didn’t just treat the symptoms. He constantly checked my progress and gradually adjusted the treatment and workload depending on how my arm was responding. As I improved, we slowly increased the exercises and started preparing my arm to return to normal training and heavier physical work. The recovery wasn’t instant, especially after having the problem for such a long time, but the improvement has been very noticeable. Week by week I started feeling better. I am now working normally again, we are gradually returning to gym training, and recently I’ve had whole days and even weeks where I almost completely forgot that I ever had a problem with my arm. Bob is very knowledgeable, professional and easy to talk to. He always explains what he is doing and why, and you can see that he genuinely cares about getting you back to normal rather than just getting you through another appointment. After spending so much time trying to find the right help, I am genuinely very grateful that I found Bob. He has made a huge difference to my recovery. I would definitely recommend him to anyone dealing with a long-term injury or persistent pain. Thank you, Bob. A true professional and a master of his work. Highly recommended!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend Bob enough! I came in dealing with lower back pain that was really holding me back in my daily routine. From the very first session, they took the time to identify the root cause of the problem, and put together a clear, realistic recovery plan including training and treatment. After training with Bob for several month now, my back has significantly improved. If you're struggling with back pain or any other injury, this is definitely the place to go!Posted on Google![]()

It’s been more than 5 months since I started working with Bob, and I’m truly grateful for the guidance and support he has provided throughout my recovery from an L5-S1 disc extrusion. The pain was intense, and initially, I didn’t have proper guidance from my chiropractor or physician, which left me scared and unsure about what to do. I found Bob through his YouTube videos and learned how important proper care, patience, and a well-planned approach are. When I first started with Bob, I was so scared that even walking 300 steps felt difficult, but today I’m able to walk around 4,000 steps. This progress is a result of Bob’s knowledge, planning, and consistent guidance. Recovery definitely takes time, and I still have some limitations, but I trust the process and believe that one day I’ll come out of this stronger than before. I’m truly thankful to Bob for being such an important part of my recovery journey.
