Soft tissue injuries are commonly categorized depending on the time frame since the injury and the healing processes that are occurring at that time.

Healig Stages

Acute – Protection Phase

The 1st acute stage is the #inflammatory stage and it is usually the first 72 hours of the initial injury. During this time allow your body to go through this process; with ice and rest being the recommended best practice.

Subacute – Repair Phase

The 2nd stage is known as the “regeneration or repair stage” (proliferation) collagen repairs begin by the fibroblasts. The fibroblast releases a collagen protein that glues the gap left by the torn tissues. Your ligaments and injured tissues begin to adhere or bridge. This is your best chance at recovering from soft tissue injuries; get on it early and be persistence using controlled manual manipulations.

Late Stage – Remodelling Phase

The 3rd stage is known as the remodeling stage, during this phase, the collagen protein glues that have been laid down for repair are remodeled in the direction of stress and strain. This means that the fibers in the tissue will become stronger, and will change their orientation from a damaged repaired tissue to more like the original undamaged tissue.

Chronic Stage – Ongoing Repair and Remodelling

Proper #treatment during this remodeling phase is very necessary if the tissues are to get the best end product of healing. It is during this stage that the tissues regain strength ???? and alignment or lack thereof.

How Does Treatment Vary Depend on the Phase?

Your treatment will vary depending on the needs and demands of your injury. Your Physical Therapist is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue injuries and the best treatment plan for your injury and phase of healing.
